Our Story

Taruchi carries forward a family tradition of hand-worked textiles — shawls, stoles and phulkari made the way they have always been made, brought online for the first time.

Phulkari, which means "flower work," is embroidered by hand in a running stitch across handspun cotton khaddar, using untwisted silk floss known as pat. There is no printed guide — the pattern is held in the hand of the person embroidering it, passed down the way a craft is passed down: by doing it, and by watching it done.

Our shawls and loi come from the wool-weaving traditions of Himachal Pradesh — Kullu and Kinnaur — where geometric borders are woven directly into the cloth on a loom, not added afterward. Our stoles move between cotton mulmul for everyday wear and silk for occasions that call for a little more shine.

Every piece we carry is chosen the way we would choose one for our own family — for the hand-work in it, and for the wear it will get long after it is bought.
